Using the wrong cleaner can cause permanent damage to your beautiful quartz worktop. This article is a vital part of our complete guide to caring for worktops, focusing on what you must avoid.
The 5 Cleaners to Avoid on Quartz
- Bleach: Regular use of bleach or products containing bleach can cause permanent discoloration and dull the finish of your quartz.
- Abrasive Powders/Cleaners: Scouring powders or creams contain small abrasive particles that will scratch and create swirl marks on the surface, dulling its shine.
- High-pH / Alkaline Cleaners: Oven cleaners, degreasers, or any cleaner with a high pH can break down the bonds between the quartz crystals and the resin, causing permanent damage.
- Acidic Cleaners: Cleaners for limescale removal or anything with a high concentration of lemon or vinegar can also damage the resin and should be avoided.
- Nail Polish Remover or Solvents: Harsh solvents can react with the resin in the quartz, causing it to soften or discolour.
What Should You Use Instead?
For 99% of cleaning, all you need is a soft cloth, warm water, and a drop of pH-neutral soap (like regular washing-up liquid). For tougher stains, refer to our guide on safe stain removal.
