Do You Need to Reseal Granite Worktops? (A Simple 5-Minute Test)

Granite maintenance is simpler than you might think. As we mention in our main guide to caring for granite and quartz, sealing is the key to keeping your granite stain-free. But how do you know when it's time to reseal?

The 5-Minute Water Test

This is the easiest way to check your sealant's integrity.

  1. Clean and Dry: Make sure the area of the worktop you're testing is clean and completely dry.
  2. Apply Water: Pour a small puddle of water, about 3 inches in diameter, onto the surface.
  3. Watch and Wait: Now, time it.

Interpreting the Results

  • If the water beads up and is still there after 5 minutes, your sealant is in perfect condition.
  • If the water starts to darken the stone within a few minutes, it's being absorbed. This means your sealant is wearing thin and it's time to reseal.
  • If the water is absorbed and darkens the stone almost immediately, your sealant is gone, and you should reseal as soon as possible to prevent staining.

How Often Should You Reseal?

This depends on the type of granite and how much you use your kitchen, but a general rule of thumb is every 3-5 years. The water test is the most reliable indicator.
