Can You Repair a Chip in a Quartz or Granite Worktop? (A Hereford Specialist's Guide)

That first chip can be heartbreaking, but it's not always a disaster. This guide, part of our complete worktop care series, explains what's possible when it comes to repairs.

What Kind of Damage Can Be Repaired?

Generally, small chips are repairable. The most common repairs we carry out are:

  • Small chips on the edge: Usually caused by an impact from a heavy pot or pan.
  • Small chips on the surface: Less common, but can happen if a heavy, sharp object is dropped.

Large cracks, especially those going all the way through the slab, are much more difficult and often impossible to repair satisfactorily.

How Are Chips Repaired?

The process involves a skilled technician carefully cleaning the chipped area and filling it with a colour-matched resin or epoxy. For granite, this may include mixing in ground-up particles of similar stone. For quartz, we use specialist resins that bond with the material. Once the filler is cured, it's sanded and polished to blend in seamlessly with the surrounding worktop.

Will the Repair Be Invisible?

The goal is to make the repair as inconspicuous as possible. On a worktop with a busy, multi-tonal pattern (like many granites or marble-effect quartzes), a good repair can be virtually invisible. On a solid-colour, especially dark, polished worktop, it can be more challenging to hide completely, but it will look significantly better than the chip.
